Happy Birthday America!!

Holidays are always so much fun! It's nice to have some time off and enjoy just hanging out together. We took advantage of the holiday week in lots of different and fun ways. Kristen, my dad, and I went to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk the weekend before the 4th.

Enjoying some lemonade on a hot day!

On July 4th, we decided to brave the heat and head down to Watsonville to do some berry picking. This is something I've loved doing ever since I was a little kid, so it was fun to take Kristen this year. Always good for a laugh, Kristen kept us chuckling on the 45 minute drive down there by taking off her shoes and socks and playing "sock puppets". She kept saying "Hi!" and waving at people out the window - very funny!

We picked olallieberries, boysenberries, and my sister went and got some strawberries, too. Then we stopped in the farm's barn and had some fresh berry pie - yummo!!

Kristen doesn't much like to be messy, so it turned out after she smooshed the first few berries in her hand and the juice ran down her arm, she was more interested in running up and down the rows of berry vines than actually picking them.

"Here, mom! Picked this one for you!"

In the evening, we went to a fireworks show that's held at a local church on a hill a couple miles from our house. They open up their whole parking lot for the night, and people come with picnic dinners and just hang out for a good time. We met our friends, the Roberts family, there for the evening. Here are Katharyn and Kristen making each other laugh - so cute!

And Kristen had a few too many chocolate chip cookies for the evening, but hey, it's a holiday! And doesn't she look cool with Grammy's sunglasses?

And just to prove we were there (ha!) here's the obligatory fireworks pics. It was a really fun show!

And if you look at the bottom right of the picture below, you'll see the great view we had of several other fireworks shows around the city going on at the same time!

Happy Birthday America! Thanks for letting us celebrate you!!
